Spring 2019 Critical Thinking Assessment

During Spring 2019, the CASL-GE administered “Fukushima Flowers”, a baseline assessment of the evidence evaluation component of the critical-thinking essential skill. The assessment activity was completed by over 500 students enrolled across 13 different Viewing a Wider World (VWW) courses. Students enrolled in VWW courses have generally completed the bulk of their lower-division GE coursework. The process served as a baseline assessment since essential skill instruction was not yet a specific requirement for lower-division GE courses prior to the 2019-20 academic year. Student work was evaluated by a team of 12 GE faculty from across a variety of disciplines and analyzed by the NMSU Office of Institutional Analysis. An Open Forum for discussion of findings of the assessment, scheduled for Spring 2020, was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
